MEMORIAL WINDOW FOR
ST MARK'S CHURCH, HERSTON,
DORSET

by Amanda Jensen

It was a great honour to create this stained glass window in memory of two special ladies - Lilian Keats and Irene Makin. I was fortunate to have known one of them (Irene), and I was married in St Mark's, where the window is installed in its Lady Chapel.

I was commissioned to make the window by Mike Keats and Chris Makin, sons of Lilian and Irene respectively. Mike provided a sketch of how he wanted the window to look  and I turned this into a workable design.

The design features a handpainted dove, representing the Holy Spirit, with beams of light shining on the Purbeck Hills in the area of Dorset home to Lilian and Irene. The daffodils were Lilian's favourite flower, and the stone wall background for the inscription represents the dry stone walls that are prevalent in this stone quarrying area.

We had to wait for the necessary faculty awarded by the Salisbury Diocese, and after a few delays due to the Covid 19 pandemic, approval was granted. The window was fitted at the beginning of May 2021 by the team from Salisbury Cathedral.

The memorial window will be dedicated by The Rev Andy Roberts during the 10am Euchartist Service on Sunday 6 February 2022.
